The British Isles sit in some of the most dynamic tidal water in the world. Tides cycle twice daily on the semi-diurnal pattern (two high tides and two low tides every 24 hours and 50 minutes), but the range varies dramatically around the coast. The Bristol Channel sees one of the world's biggest tidal ranges (over 12 m on a big spring); parts of the Solent see a double-high-water tide with a tiny range.
Spring tides happen around new and full moon, when the Sun and Moon's gravity align, pulling the highest highs and the lowest lows. Neap tides happen around the first and last quarter, with smaller ranges between high and low water. The two cycles repeat every ~14 days, which is why tide tables typically span a fortnight.
Tides matter for almost every coastal activity: sea anglers fish the run of a tide; surfers and kayakers plan around slack water; commercial skippers pick safe departure windows; walkers and birders need to know when low-water marks emerge. Every page on Fish-logged shows the live water height from the closest UK Environment Agency tide gauge, plus a calibrated 10-day forecast and a day-by-day breakdown of every high and low tide in that window.
The UK has a semi-diurnal tide: two high tides and two low tides every 24 hours and 50 minutes. The largest ranges are spring tides (around new and full moon) and the smallest are neap tides (around the first and last quarter). Tide range varies hugely around the coast, from under 1 m at parts of the Solent up to over 12 m in the Bristol Channel.
Live water-height readings come from the UK Environment Agency tide gauge network, refreshed every 30 minutes. The 10-day forecast is generated from the Open-Meteo ocean model and calibrated to each location's gauge so the numbers match printed Admiralty tide tables.
The data is accurate to within a few centimetres for the live gauge readings and within 10 to 20 cm for the modelled forecast. For navigation use, especially crossing bars, shallow approaches or anchoring, always cross-check official UK Hydrographic Office Admiralty tide tables.
